In America, nearly 20% of all adults have a clinically diagnosed mental health disorder and one-quarter of adults in England are affected by a mental health problem each year. 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) may help this crisis,  providing new ways to tackle the need for more affordable and available mental health treatments.

Several chatbots already function as online therapists. These technologies recognise user input patterns and offer personalized and contextually appropriate responses.

They are often equipped with a database of mental health resources, such as articles, coping strategies, and contact information for professional help, which they can direct users to as needed.  Many of them use a model of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) – a structured, short-term psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. One example is Woebot, which has been used by over 1.5 million mental health patients so far.  

Some AI companies, such as Biobeat, are wearable devices that interpret bodily signals related to physical and mental health distress. Instead of direct interaction with users, they collect information on sleeping patterns and variations in heart rate and rhythm and use these measures to predict their mood and cognitive state. Users may receive warnings and be provided with useful solutions accordingly. 

Diagnosing Mental Health Conditions

AI could also be useful in a clinical setting. It could help diagnose the mental health conditions of patients by analyzing large datasets of patient information, including medical histories, self-reported symptoms, and behavioral patterns, AI could predict what condition someone may be presenting with 

Optimizing Treatment 

AI could help inform clinicians about the most suitable mental health treatment plans for their patients. It can process data about the patient’s personality, medical history, and current treatment progress and compare it with historical data from patients with similar conditions. 

Predictive AI models could also monitor patients’ ongoing treatment and adjust real-time recommendations to ensure they receive the most appropriate care. Models could also identify relapse or risk factors for worsening conditions, allowing for proactive interventions.

Preliminary Evidence on AI Therapy Efficacy

One review of 35 studies found that “AI-based CAs (controversial agents – systems designed to engage with controversial material) significantly reduce symptoms of depression and distress, “and these effects were significant in CAs integrated with instant messaging apps.” However, the review also showed that these interventions didn’t improve participants’ overall psychological well-being. 

In a study published this year, the researchers showed that although Woebot helped improve the mental health of adults, it was no more effective than other non-AI self-help technologies. 

These results indicate that while AI therapy may be beneficial, it may not work for everybody. Moreover, additional therapies may be required.

Regarding patient mental health diagnosis, a 2019 review from the University of California found that machine learning could predict and classify mental health problems with a “high accuracy.” 

Twenty-eight studies were included, and electronic health records and data from brain imaging, smartphones, video monitoring and social media were used to predict several mental health problems in participants.

However, the authors noted many limitations to these studies, such as the small sample sizes. As such, these studies may not truly represent what AI would be like in wide scale mental health practice. 

In a study published this year, the researchers analyzed tweets from two million users and found this data was more reliable at predicting the users mental health compared to traditional yearly state-level survey measures.

Though current evidence for AI psychotherapy is mixed, its effectiveness in patient diagnosis and treatment may improve as AI technologies develop.

This year, AI models like GPT-4 have seen significant improvements in their ability to offer accurate and coherent responses. In addition, there has been a significant improvement in real-time language translators, making communication between people from different countries more accessible.

In addition, many studies that demonstrate the efficacy of AI in mental health care are based on small, specific samples, which limits the generalizability of findings to the wider population.
