Psychedelics are having a moment. Once dismissed as dangerous and illegal, substances like psilocybin and MDMA are now at the center of a growing mental health revolution. Psychedelics are currently prohibited Schedule 1 compounds<\/strong> in America, but it\u2019s possible they could become legally available for medical use now that Donald Trump is back in the White House. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Psychedelic Renaissance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There has been a surge in research into the therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin<\/strong> (found in magic mushrooms<\/a>), MDMA<\/a><\/strong>, and LSD<\/strong>. Large-scale clinical trials<\/a> show these substances can profoundly benefit people with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, and more. With this growing research, governments across the globe have begun to reconsider their laws surrounding psychedelics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, Australia <\/strong>is the only country to have fully legalized the medical use of psychedelics nationwide. However, special access <\/strong>to <\/strong>prescriptions are available in certain other countries, including Canada and Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the US, psychedelics remain Schedule 1 compounds<\/strong>, meaning they\u2019re deemed to be harmful and have no medical value. Yet this scheduling is heavily criticized, and many advocacy groups and initiatives are pushing for change. In recent years, various states and cities have decriminalized<\/strong> psychedelic use, meaning people caught in possession of psychedelics are unlikely to be charged. Oregon also became the first US state to legalize the therapeutic use of psilocybin<\/a> in 2020, followed by Colorado in 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/strong> rejected the approval of MDMA-assisted therapy<\/a>, stating that the research just wasn\u2019t strong enough. This was a huge blow for advocates who had been working tirelessly to bring these treatments into the mainstream. However, with Donald Trump returning to the White House, things could take an unexpected turn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kennedy has been a vocal supporter of psychedelic therapy, seeing it as a game-changer for mental health<\/a>. He even went on X (formerly Twitter) to call out the FDA\u2019s opposition to psychedelics as part of a broader “war on public health<\/a>.” His commitment to reversing these regulatory decisions could be a huge deal for the future of psychedelic medicine in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
