Social isolation refers to the lack of contact between an individual and society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3874845\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">loneliness is defined as<\/a> \u201ca distressing feeling that accompanies the perception that one&#8217;s social needs are not being met by the quantity or especially the quality of one&#8217;s social relationships.\u201d As such, it\u2019s possible to be socially isolated and not feel lonely, and feel lonely while being with other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychiatrist Sarvada Chandra Tiwari has defined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3890922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">three categories of loneliness<\/a>. These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Situational loneliness: caused by socioeconomic and cultural factors, such as migration and interpersonal conflicts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developmental loneliness: caused by feeling separated from and unable to contribute within society, such as poverty, marginalization, and disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internal loneliness: innate feelings of loneliness caused by things low self-esteem and self-worth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social isolation is one of the main causes of loneliness. Elderly people, who are frequently subjected to loneliness in Western culture, tend to be most affected by loneliness, and this has been linked to an increased risk of developing dementia (see more on health risks below).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, people of all ages and cultures can be subjected to loneliness. As such, knowing how to manage feelings of loneliness, especially when socially isolated, is essential for maintaining a good quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Health Effects of Loneliness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social isolation and loneliness can have significant health effects, impacting both physical and mental well-being. Studies have shown that individuals who experience loneliness are more likely to have higher rates of emergency room admissions and nursing home admissions, as well as a range of other health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loneliness has been linked to conditions such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Heart disease:<\/em> Prolonged loneliness can contribute to elevated blood pressure levels, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. One study from the American College of Cardiology found social isolation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/About-ACC\/Press-Releases\/2023\/02\/01\/21\/26\/Social-Isolation-Loneliness-Increase-Risk-for-Heart-Failure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">loneliness increased the risk of hospitalization or death from heart failure by 15% to 20%<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Weakened immune function:<\/em> Chronic loneliness can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections and illnesses.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Anxiety and depression:<\/em> Feelings of loneliness can contribute to the development of anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Cognitive decline and dementia:<\/em> Studies have found a link between loneliness and cognitive decline, including an increased risk of developing dementia such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.
